and so i’m off to see bits of the west again; away from a city so taxing (lookin’ at ya, manila.) back home to london for a while then around europe and the arctic, by myself, just how i like it. (with, of course, appearances by friends i haven’t seen in years – YEARS!) plenty of time to do so much with people i care about. ahh, the countdown to the next month begins.

8/

august is about —

– reunions (when one of my favourite people in the world decided to surprise me and spend so much time in manila and remind me how wonderful this city can be or how alive i can be; or when an old friend, an old love pops back around and it’s still good, and it’s always going to be good, and that’s a nice feeling altogether.)

– reconnections (when faraway friends whom i’ve lost contact with for quite some time comes back in orbit and prove that the great friendships are those that can withstand the test of time and distance; paused for a while but once you press play, you’re back, but better, so much better.)

– returns (i’m going back to london in the fall – officially. got my visa sorted today, innit. i’m coming home, i’m coming home, I’M COMING HOME.)

"There is a fundamental reason why we look at the sky with wonder and longing—for the same reason that we stand, hour after hour, gazing at the distant swell of the open ocean. There is something like an ancient wisdom, encoded and tucked away in our DNA, that knows its point of origin as surely as a salmon knows its creek. Intellectually, we may not want to return there, but the genes know, and long for their origins—their home in the salty depths. But if the seas are our immediate source, the penultimate source is certainly the heavens… The spectacular truth is—and this is something that your DNA has known all along—the very atoms of your body—the iron, calcium, phosphorus, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and on and on—were initially forged in long-dead stars. This is why, when you stand outside under a moonless, country sky, you feel some ineffable tugging at your innards. We are star stuff. Keep looking up."
